M: What do you do?
S: I’m a creative for a delivery service called Pearl NYC and I’m also designing clothes right now; Clothing collection and a brand called YACTEN
M: How long have you been growing out your hair?
S: Probably like seven, eight years now.
M: The bleach is interesting, do you bleach it yourself?
S: No I don’t bleach it myself. I’ve got actually a stylist that [a friend] put me on to do blonde. I went blonde probably last year. It started with just the tips and eventually, we just went lighter and lighter and lighter.
M: What products do you use specifically or any routines that you have?
S: I use a soft conditioner once or twice a week. I use a leaving conditioner Knot-Today or Mizani leave-in conditioner and then condition with OLAPLEX and I’ll do like a hair mask once a week.
M: Both your parents are black I’m assuming?
S: No. My dad is Haitian and my mom’s white.
M: And growing up you didn’t have an afro?
S: I’ve had a fro my whole life. Growing up. I’d have a fro like pretty much throughout the year. I’d get braids. I grew up idolizing Allen Iverson so I’ll get cornrows and I always kept the fro. I would cut it during summertime just because of the heat but I’ve always had one.
M: Did your mom teach you how to do your hair?
S: My mom didn’t necessarily teach me. She gave me some sense but she used to work with a lot of black women. So she used to get advice from them to come back to me and I would get my styles and things.
M: Any specific comments or compliments that you get?
S: These days. I get compliments all the time. You know, I mean, but I’ve also learned how to like do my hair and style it more. I get compliments all the time and I appreciate it a lot from women. But you’d be surprised a lot of men will compliment me on my hair and just like the style.
M: Is there anything specific you wish people knew about black hair?
S: It’s not as limiting as we make it seem. I think even myself, I used to limit myself so much. I can do so many unique, different styles within my hair and I think that’s something that we should constantly embrace.
